Projectors: LCD Verses DLP (The downfall of DLP technology)

The most common question asked when buying a new projector for the home, office, or classroom is: should I take an LCD projector or a DLP projector? LCD, short for ‘liquid crystal device’ and DLP, short for ‘digital light processing’ are the two most common projector imaging technologies. With so many business brands and types available, it can be overwhelming for the buyer to make a choice between those technologies. It comes down to the fact that LCD projectors offer far superior image quality and colour accuracy. The next part of this article explains why DLP projectors struggle with projecting the same standard of image quality.

It’s like a set of blinds in your home on your bedroom window. By twisting a rod you can have the shutters open or closed, depending on if you want to let light in or not. This is exactly how an LCD projector operates. Each pixel operates like a unique shutter on a set of blinds to either send light through or to block it. DLP on the other hand is made up of millions of microscopic mirrors or ‘pixel elements’ as the professionals like to call them. Each pixel element operates to either reflect light or block it.

How the light source is processed from when the projector switches on to when the content reaches your screen is ultimately important for image quality, brightness and colour accuracy. LCD projectors shine white light from the lamp by separating it into red, blue and green components, by three mirrors which direct the coloured light to 3 stand alone LCD panels. The 3 LCD panels create the elements of the image by processing each pixel on and off. The pixels are then combined in a glass prism to form the projector image. Something to realise about LCD projectors is that all three colours are directed onto your projected surface at once. The way a DLP projector functions is totally different and even the way an image appears is not the same. With DLP, white light from the lamp is projected through a turning colour wheel with transparent red, blue and green segments, at speeds up to 11,000 rpm/s. This method of making an image creates a sequence of red, blue and green light. The millions of micro mirrors as mentioned above reflect the coloured light on the pixels to form the image elements. The elements of the image are projected in sequence on the screen, one colour at a time. The viewer’s eye will then put together each coloured element of the image into a full image. In LCD projectors, all colours are available all the time to deliver high brightness and fantastic colour accuracy. In DLP, only one colour is available at once, causing lower colour brightness and accuracy. Some DLP developers have placed a white segment for the colour wheel to improve brightness overall, but this further degrades colour accuracy.

I see in forums all the time that DLP offers a higher contrast ratio and as such must be better quality. For those uncertain, the contrast ratio is a measure of a display system defined as the ratio of the luminance of the brightest white to that of the darkest black that the system is capable of producing. DLP projectors do possess high contrast specifications compared to the majority of LCD projectors. Initially, this seems to be a benefit, however, in reality, the true black level is determined by the ambient light in the room when the projector is being used. Do not be tricked by contrast specifications on websites and in brochures.

When the content you are trying to bring to life needs moving images, DLP projection technology also has image errors, or ‘artifacts’. The most typical artifact that a DLP projector displays with moving images is colour break up. Colour break up is inherent in DLP systems because moving images keep changing between the time red, blue and green colours are displayed. LCD projectors do not have this problem because every colour is projected simultaneously. DLP builders have developed 3DLP solutions using 3 chips to solve the colour break up artifacts, but the cost of these projectors make them not practical for the large part of businesses and consumers.

Another point of difference between LCD and DLP is how they balance for the refractive qualities of light. Think back to high school science, and remember when they taught you how the various colours of light refract different amounts when directed through the same lens. The downside with DLP projectors is that they use the one same panel with the same lens to project Red, Blue and Green. All 3 colours are obviously different and refract light at different levels. Most of the time with a DLP projector, some yellow colour will appear above and a superfluous blue will come through below an image as simple as a single black line. In manufacturing LCD projectors can be set to remove these effects on the projected image, as each colour is refracted on a separate LCD panels.

The only true plus (excluding price) with picking a DLP projector is its smaller total size and weight. However, this is only relevant to mobility and needs to be traded off against the image plusses of LCD projectors. If resulting picture quality is vital to you, then the choice is easy. Yachting and Yacht Clubs

As the Dutch rose to preeminence in sea power during the 17th century, the early yacht had been a pleasure craft used first by royalty and secondly by the burghers in the canals as well as the protected and unprotected waters of the Low Countries. Racing yachts was incidental, coming out of private matches. English yachting started with King Charles II of England during his exile in the Low Countries. On his reaffirmation to the English monarchy in 1660, the city of Amsterdam sent him a 20-metre (66-foot) pleasure boat with a beam (maximum width) of 5.6 m (18 feet), which he called Mary. The first yacht association in the British Isles, the Water Club, was started at about 1720 at Cork, Ire., as a cruising and unofficial coast guard association, and held great naval panoply and gravity. The closest thing to racing was the “chase,” in which the “fleet” pursued a fictional enemy. The club endured, largely as a social club, until 1765, and in 1828, when conglomerating with other organisations, it became known as the Cork Yacht Club (later the Royal Cork Yacht Club).

Yacht racing was seen in some stipulated method on the Thames in the mid-18th century. The duke of Cumberland founded the Cumberland Fleet for Thames racing in 1775. When George IV ascended to monarchy in 1820, it was known as the Fleet to His Majesty’s Coronation Sailing Society. The Thames Yacht Club seceded with a racing argument, to become the Royal Thames Yacht Club in 1830. The first English yacht group had been started at Cowes on the Isle of Wight in 1815, and royal funding made the Solent - the strait between the mainland and the Isle of Wight - the continuing setting of British yacht racing. The association at Cowes became the Royal Yachting Club, likewise at the rise of George IV. Every member was required to have boats of at least 20 tons (20,321 kg). Sailing tests for great bids were held, and the social life was splendid. It came to be that the Royal Yachting Club boats were raised in size to more than 350 tons.

In North America, yachting was first accomplished with the Dutch in New York in the 17th century and went on when the English took dominance. Sailing was largely for pleasure and reached its high point in George Crowinshield’s Cleopatra’s Barge (1815), which traveled on the Mediterranean Sea and set a minimum of luxury and sophistication for the later yachts in the area from the late 19th century. The first enduring American yacht association, the Detroit Boat Club, was instigated in 1839. In 1844, John C. Stevens founded the New York Yacht Club while on board his schooner Gimcrack.

Kinds of sailboats
The Early sailing yachts took the design of such naval craft as brigantines, schooners, and cutters from the 17th century through to the second half of the 19th century. The craft of sizeable yachts was first heavily impacted by the win of America, which was drawn by George Steers for a club led by John C. Stevens, and it was the boat for which the America’s Cup (q.v.) was named after its victory at Cowes in 1851. Early yachts were not designed and crafted in a contemporary sense, with merely a model used. Not until the second half of the 19th century did what was labeled naval architecture come about. Not until the 1920s did the application of the science of aerodynamics do for the structure of sails and rigging what science had done earlier for hulls.

Because most of all sailboats had to be individually built, there was a requirement for handicapping boats before the one-design class boats were made. Hence, a rating rule came into being, which resulted in the International Rule, taken on in 1906 and amended in 1919. In modern times, one of the fastest growing areas in sailing is that of one-design class boats. All boats in a one-design class are built to single dimensions in length, beam, sail area, and other elements (for an example of a two-person sailboat, see illustration). Racing such boats can be done on an even basis with no handicapping necessary. A great example is the generic International America’s Cup Class taken on board for racers in the 1992 America’s Cup race.

As long as yachting was an activity mostly for the aristocracy and the rich, expense was no object, and the size of boats grew, in both length and weight. The promotion and preference of smaller yachts came in the latter half of the 19th century out of the sailing of the Englishmen R.T. McMullen, a stockbroker, and E.F. Knight, a barrister and journalist. A voyage around the world (1895–98) sailed single-handedly by the naturalized American captain Joshua Slocum in the 11.3-metre Spray proved the value of small boats. Later in the 20th century, notably after World War II, smaller racing and leisure yachts became more popular, down to the dinghy, a favourite training boat, of 3.7 m. In the late 20th century, craft of less than 3 m were setting sail single-handedly across the Atlantic Ocean.

Kinds of power yachts
After the decade 1840–50, at which point steam was set to take the place of sail power in public boats, the steam engine, and later the internal-combustion engine, were favoured increasingly in personal craft. Bigger power yachts were furthered to a high degree, and long-distance cruising turned into a favoured activity of the wealthy. The earliest power yachts were paddle-wheel boats; these then gave way to yachts powered by the fully submerged screw or propeller type of propulsion. Like naval and merchant yachts, auxiliaries carrying both sail and power were the yacht fashion for a number of years. By the later half of the 20th century, many yachts were still auxiliaries, but the majority were solely power yachts that had gasoline or diesel engines.

In the last decade of the 19th century there was a push in the design of large steam yachts. Conspicuous among these was the Mayflower (1897) of 2,690 tons, with triple-expansion engines, twin screws, and a compartmented iron hull, and was operated by a crew of over 150. The Mayflower, purchased by the United States Navy in 1898, was the official yacht of the president of the United States until 1929 and saw active service for World War II.

As more sizeable and more reliable internal-combustion engines were developed, many bigger craft started using them for power. The development of the diesel engine, employing heavy oil for fuel, progressed from World War I. During the decade following that, bigger power-yacht creation grew, climaxing in the Orion (1930) at 3,097 tons. From that point the biggest auxiliary yacht constructed was the four-masted, steel, barque-rigged Sea Cloud (1931) of 2,323 tons.

The building of bigger power craft lessened from 1932, and the fashion after that was for smaller, less expensive craft. From World War II, a lot of small naval vessels were traded by private owners for conversion to yachts. In the late 20th century, yachting is a globally loved sport enjoyed by thousands of yachtsmen who are actually sailing and maintaining their own small leisure yachts. The number of yachts and owners is increasing steadily, not only in the traditional areas on the beach but also on inland waterways and lakes.

Proportional, Progressive, and Regressive taxes

Taxes can be distinguished by the impact they have on the distribution of income and wealth. A proportional tax is a tax that places the same relative onus on each taxpayer—i.e., when tax liability and income grow in the same levels. A progressive tax is characterizable by a greater than proportional growth in the tax onus in regard to the rise in income, and a regressive tax is characterizable by a less than proportional rise in the relative onus. So, progressive taxes are thought of as removing inequalities in income distribution, while regressive taxes may result in an increase these inequalities.

The taxes that are often thought to be progressive include individual income taxes and estate taxes. Income taxes that are declarably progressive, however, can become less so within the upper-income categories—in particular if a taxpayer is allowed to reduce his tax base by declaring deductions or by removing some particular income aspects from his taxable income. Proportional tax rates when applied to lower-income demographics can also be more progressive if such exemptions of a personal nature are declared.

Income measured over the period of a year might not absolutely provide the most suitable measure of taxpaying ability. For example, transitory growth in income may be saved, and within temporary declines in income a taxpayer might elect to finance consumption by taking from savings. Ergo, if taxation is compared alongside “permanent income,” it can be less regressive (or more progressive) than if made comparable with annual income.

Sales taxes and excises (excepting luxuries) tend to be regressive, because the spread of individual income consumed or spent for a specific good decreases as the amount of personal income rises. Poll taxes (also termed head taxes), calculated as a flat amount per capita, patently are regressive.

It is complicated to determine corporate income taxes and taxes on business as progressive, regressive, or proportionate, principally because of uncertainty about the ability of businesses to shift their tax expenses (see below Shifting and incidence). This difficulty of nominating who bears the tax burden lays essentially on whether a national or a subnational (that is, provincial or state) tax is being considered.

In considering the economic purposes of taxation, it is important to differentiate between differing concepts of tax rates. The statutory rates are specified in legislature; usually these are marginal rates, but occasionally they are median rates. Marginal income tax rates denote the fraction of incremental income that is demanded by taxation when income rises by one dollar. So, if tax onus rises by 45 cents when income increases by one dollar, the marginal tax rate is 45 percent. Income tax regulations generally contain graduated marginal rates—i.e., rates that rise as income increases. Structured analysis of marginal tax rates are required to consider provisions apart from the formal statutory rate structure. If, for example, a particular tax credit (reduction in tax) lessens by 20 cents for each one-dollar rise in income, the marginal rate is 20 percentage points higher than indicated by the statutory rates. Since marginal rates signify how after-tax income is changed in response to changes in before-tax income, they are the relevant ones for assessing incentive effects of taxation. It is even more complicated to nominate the marginal effective tax rate applicable to income from business and capital, as it may depend on factors such as the structure of depreciation allowances, the deductibility of interest, and the provisions for inflation adjustment. A basic economic theorem holds that the marginal effective tax rate in income from capital is nothing under a consumption-based tax.

Average income tax rates show the percentage of total income that is paid in taxation. The pattern of average rates is the one that is necessary for considering the distributional equity of taxation. Under a progressive income tax the average income tax rate grows with income. Average income tax rates usually increase with income, both because personal allowances are allowed for the taxpayer and dependents and because marginal tax rates are graduated; on the other side of things, preferential treatment of income received fundamentally by high-income households may dampen these effects, allowing regressivity, as shown by average tax rates that decline as income rises.
